The Higher Institute for Earthquake Research and Studies (HIERS) was established in 2005 as per Decree 517 of 2000 as a faculty of the Damascus University.
HIERS is a hub for seismic research and education, covering earthquake sciences, structural engineering, and geotechnical aspects. It supervises student research, offers expertise to public and private entities, develops and enforces seismic standards, collaborates on research, publishes scientific materials, and raises awareness through specialized journals and bulletins. Additionally, it fosters collaborations locally, regionally, and internationally for knowledge exchange in seismic sciences and engineering.
