The following is a selection of articles and reports written in the last week on Syria, related to economic, business and social issues:

Syria economy ‘set back decades’ by war: “Syria’s once-promising economy has been set back more than 30 years by its brutal civil war, economists say, and it may never recover.”

Borderline warfare: “As much as the Syrian conflict is a battle for territory within the country, it is also a battle for the borders”

War and Infectious Diseases: Challenges of the Syrian Civil War: “Beyond such devastation, the civil war has introduced epidemics of infections that have spread through vulnerable populations in Syria and neighboring countries.”

Syrian wine defies war to reach the most lavish tables: “It is probably one of the most difficult and expensive-to-produce wines in the world, but its creators, brothers Karim and Sandro Saade, have decided to go on producing Domaine de Bargylus, despite the conflict that has been tearing Syria apart since 2011.”

Control of Syrian Oil Fuels War Between Kurds and Islamic State: “The Kurds produce about 40,000 barrels of crude oil a day from wells they control, according to Kurdish officials here. Some of it is sold to the mostly Arab kiln operators at $15 a barrel, they said.”

Syrian families face winter food crisis: “Opposition calls on international donors to help prevent famine in Syria as UN predicts drastic food shortages.”

U.N. Targets Oil Trucks to Cut Off IS, Nusra Revenues: “A U.N. report is recommending the seizure of all oil tanker trucks leaving Islamist-controlled territory in Iraq and Syria to cut off millions of dollars from crude sales now bankrolling the jihadists.”
